Never married: A person who has never been a partner in a legal or registered marriage.

Widowed: A person whose spouse in a registered marriage has died and who has not remarried.

Divorced: A person who has formally ended his or her legal or registered marriage by legal means and who has not remarried. People who have obtained a decree nisi are considered to be divorced.

Separated: A person who was a partner in a legal, registered or de facto marriage, but has left their spouse and not yet divorced.

De facto marriage: The relationship between two people who live together in a couple relationship who are not registered as being married to each other.

Registered marriage: A person is considered to be in a registered relationship with another person (whether of the same sex or a different sex) if the relationship is registered under a prescribed law of a state or territory in Australia prescribed for the purposes of section 22B of the Acts Interpretation Act 1901)
